The pre-Christmas period is a very cozy time when you make real Christmas mulled wine, it also tastes good. It's been a tradition for a long time and in many countries to make sweet wine with different spices before Christmas. In Norway it has become more and more popular. I love making food and different types of drinks from scratch. Mulled wine is something that is really simple to make at home. I make syrup with different spices and pour it into 2 dl bottles. One of these bottles and a bottle of red wine makes for perfect mulled wine. I usually add a little bit of cognac before I serve it. Here is the recipe.
Step 1
Start with a pot and add cold water. Put all the spices, ginger and a vanilla beans. Cut the vanilla beans into two pieces before adding it to the water. Place the pot onto the stove and let it simmer on medium heat for one hour. The whole house will be filled with an amazing smell of Christmas.
Step 2
Strain all the spices out, but make sure that all those black dots make it through the strainer. This is real vanilla.
Step 3
Add sugar to the water and boil it so the sugar dissolves. Then pour it into a one liter measuring cup. If it doesn't fill it all the way up, add water. Too much water might have evaporated when you boiled it. Now we pour it over into 2 dl bottles.
Step 4
Pour it into the bottles and place some nice labels on them with instructions. I used four bottles and made some mulled wine for today with the rest.
Step 5
Mix it with a good red wine and warm it up carefully. It's IMPORTANT that it does not surpass 78 degrees. If so, some of the alcohol will evaporate and we don't want that do we? Finish it off with some cognac, raisins and chopped almonds.
Step 6
Serve it warm and enjoy your homemade mulled wine! Good luck!
