Nasi goreng - Indonesian street food with chicken and rice!

Incredibly good fried rice topped with eggs!


  • 3 pcs chicken breast
  • 3 dl rice (must be cooked first)
  • 2 tbsp ketchup manis (marinade chicken)
  • 1 pcs onion
  • 1 pcs red chili
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 tsp chili sauce
  • 1 tsp shrimp paste (optional)
  • 1 dl soy sauce
  • 2 pcs eggs (for rice)
  • 4 pcs fried eggs
  • 4 pcs tomatoes
  • 3 pcs spring onion
  • 3 pcs shallots (for frying)

This is extremely popular street food from Indonesia. It is fried rice and chicken stuffed with flavor topped with a fried egg and served with some extra vegetables. It's easy to make and a dish I'm sure most people like. If you have extra rice left after a dinner, this is a super dish to use it in. Here I will show you how.

Step 1

Start by cutting the chicken into cubes and pour over Ketchap Manis. It is a sweet soy that you can now buy in most stores. If you do not get this, you can use regular soy and mix with brown sugar. Leave for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Find a large pan and fry finely chopped onion, chili and garlic in oil. I add a little extra chili sauce and shrimp paste. You do not need this if you do not want it or if it is difficult to get. Shrimp paste is a product that smells quite bad, but in dishes like this it gives an incredibly good taste. Cook for a few more minutes and add the chicken.

Step 3

Mix everything and fry until the chicken is cooked through. Crack in eggs and stir well. Add the rice and soy and mix everything. Now the fried rice is ready.

Step 4

Accessories for this dish can be varied, but it is good with something crispy and fresh. I use fried shallots which are very common for this dish, and tomatoes and spring onions. To fry shallots, cut them into strips and fry in oil until they get a golden brown color. Place them on baking paper and let them dry. Then you get some small crispy strips of onion.

Step 5

Fry fried eggs on high heat in a little oil and when the eggs are ready, the dish is ready!

Place the fried rice on a plate and place the tomatoes and spring onions next to it. I like to serve with a little extra chili sauce, but you can choose for yourself.
